Who are the athletes that hit the public of the X Games? Here are some of the competitors who have established themselves as legends of sports over the years:
Shaun Palmer: This native of Kirkwood, California, once said “I am the king!” [Source: Snowboarder Magazine]. When it comes to snowboarding, he’s right. By 2008, he had competed in ten X Games, and at 38, he still ruled the mountains. Palmer has the largest number of gold medals in the history of Winter X Games.
Shaun White: This athlete with carrot-colored hair leads not only one but two sports – skateboarding and snowboarding. In 2003, he became the first person to compete in Winter X Games and Summer in two different sports. In the search for gold in 2008, he completed the first volume of 1.260 degrees (three rotations and a half) in the history of the X Games.
Andy Macdonald: Better known as “Andy Mac”, the legend of skateboarding racing in the X Games since its inception and has won more medals than any other athlete in competition (17 – including six gold). Macdonald is also distinguished by being the only person to have been able to skate into the White House [source: Andy Macdonald.com].
Terje Haakonsen: It is considered one of the best athletes of snowboarding in the history of the sport. Even if it does not compete, Haakonsen is still a legend.
Mike Metzger: Called the “godfather” of motocross for free, which introduced many innovations to the sport, Metzger is probably best known for becoming the first to do two backflips on a bike track.
Bob Burnquist: Brazilian accumulates seven gold medals since the 1st edition of the X Games. The skater ended 2008 as 1st in world ranking of vert WCS (World Cup Skateboarding).
Sandro Dias Also known as Mineirinho, the Brazilian is the “king of 540 degrees.” More than that, it was with a 900 degrees (two and a half turns in the air) he won the gold medal at the X Games in Los Angeles in 2006 for Best Trick.
Tony Hawk: Even if you do not know anything about skate certainly heard of Tony Hawk. His name and face has graced everything from video games to events of ESPN (Tony Hawk’s Gigantic Skatepark Tour). Before Sandro Dias in 1999, he managed to make the first 900 degrees in the Summer X Games in San Francisco.
Fabiola da Silva: Competing in an event dominated by men is not easy, but Brazil’s Fabiola da Silva know their way around among the boys. She has won eight medals at the X Games skating (seven of them gold), and was the first woman to perform a backflip in a competition.
